School Management System in Fayville, Massachusetts

When we started talking with the Fayville school board, we learned their biggest pain point wasn’t the software itself, it was the time teachers spent manually updating three different systems. Teachers averaged 90 minutes each week just copying grades between the gradebook app and the parent portal. A custom system that connected attendance, grades, and payments would save 45 minutes per teacher per week across the district.

Most off-the-shelf school systems assume you’ll adapt to their workflows. After reviewing the school’s current processes, we realized their workflow for handling late arrivals and early dismissals was unique to Massachusetts charter schools. A standard system would require extra steps that added 15 minutes of manual work per incident.

We built a Laravel backend with a React frontend that pulls data from the district’s existing SIS and syncs it with the parent mobile app in real time. The MySQL database handles 12,000 student records without slowing down during parent login spikes. The REST API connects to the school’s existing meal payment system so parents see a single balance for lunch and field trips.

For the after-school program run by the Fayville Recreation Department, we added a Flutter mobile app that tracks program registration, attendance, and payments. Parents can sign up for bus routes and late pickup directly in the app, cutting the recreation coordinator’s weekly administrative time from 10 hours to 90 minutes.
