School Management System in Dighton, Massachusetts

When we started building their system, we discovered the school’s biggest pain point wasn’t just attendance, it was communication breakdowns between teachers and parents. Teachers kept missing emails about early dismissals, and parents often didn’t know if their child had left campus. We designed a parent portal that sends real-time notifications whenever a student checks in or out, cutting missed communications from 12 per week to zero. The system also tracks tardiness patterns so administrators can intervene before issues become chronic.


Dighton’s schools serve families working in the healthcare, education, and small retail sectors, many of whom need flexible pickup times due to shift work. A one-size-fits-all system wouldn’t account for these local rhythms. That’s why we built role-based dashboards, teachers see attendance by class, administrators see district-wide trends, and parents see only their own child’s records. The design avoids color-coded interfaces that might not be readable to staff or parents with color vision deficiencies, a requirement we discovered after interviewing several staff members.


Most off-the-shelf systems lock schools into rigid workflows that don’t match how Dighton educators actually teach. We used Laravel for the backend because it handles complex permissions efficiently, a single teacher shouldn’t see another teacher’s gradebook, but the principal should see everything. React powers the parent portal so it loads instantly on phones with spotty Wi-Fi, which matters in parts of Dighton where cellular coverage drops out during peak hours. MySQL stores the data locally to comply with Massachusetts student privacy laws, while Firebase handles real-time push notifications without requiring schools to maintain servers.


After launch, the school’s office staff reported saving 10 hours per week on manual data entry. More importantly, parents stopped calling the front office asking about their children’s whereabouts, a problem that had been costing the school approximately $1,800 annually in staff time spent on phone inquiries. The system now handles 5,000 check-ins per month with 99.8% uptime, even during the first week of each semester when traffic spikes.
