We rebuilt the Peabody school's system to automatically log every email open, text delivery, and parent response timestamp. When a parent clicked a link or replied, the system marked their communication as received and updated the student's record in real time. Most off-the-shelf school management systems force schools into rigid workflows designed for statewide districts, not independent academies. A Danvers classical academy needed to track Socratic seminar attendance alongside AP exam registration, which meant building custom modules that standardize discussion participation metrics while preserving the rigor of their curriculum. We built a Laravel backend with React dashboards that let teachers log seminar participation with a single click, then auto-calculated the weekly discussion quality metrics their accreditation board required. State reporting used to take the registrar's office three days each quarter. Now it runs automatically at 2 AM every Sunday, pulling from the same database that powers the parent portal and faculty gradebooks. The system aggregates attendance, discipline incidents, and standardized test scores into the exact format the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education requires, then exports the file directly to the state portal. We used MySQL for the core relational data and a REST API layer so the state portal fetches exactly what it needs without accessing sensitive student information.
