Most of our work starts by watching the actual bottleneck. For the research lab above, the reconciliation delay came from data being entered twice, once in the field and once in the report. We built a React frontend backed by a Node.js API and a PostgreSQL database, because the study data had strict relationships between samples, batches, and results that a relational schema enforces cleanly. Reconciliation dropped from two days to under an hour.

Here is a decision we make often. When a business tool has heavy, rule-driven workflows, approvals, permissions, billing logic, and audit trails, we usually reach for Laravel and PHP over a thin JavaScript backend, because the framework handles that structure without a pile of custom glue code. When the app is interaction-heavy or needs live updates, React and Node.js earn their place instead. We pick based on what the app has to do, not what is fashionable this year.

For a South San Francisco logistics operator moving temperature-sensitive freight, we built a dispatch and tracking portal that connected to their existing carrier data through REST APIs, containerized the services with Docker so deploys stopped breaking, and hosted it on AWS for room to grow. The honest tradeoff: that setup carries more infrastructure overhead than a single server, so we only recommend it when uptime and integration load actually justify it.
